Common Mistakes in Government Exam Preparation

Avoid the top 10 mistakes that aspirants make during preparation. From ignoring current affairs to over-relying on shortcuts, learn what not to do.

SSC CHSL 2025 had 30.69 lakh applicants and only 36% appeared for the exam. Most people lose before the exam, in how they prepare. These are the patterns we see most often.

The ten mistakes

  • 1. Collecting resources instead of solving questions. One book and the last 10 years of papers beat five Telegram PDF folders.
  • 2. Applying for everything without checking eligibility or dates, then missing the one exam that mattered. Use the eligibility tool and set reminders.
  • 3. Skipping mocks until "the syllabus is complete". It never is. Start mocks from month two.
  • 4. Not analysing mocks. A mock without a two-hour review is wasted. Keep an error log.
  • 5. Ignoring negative marking. Attempting 100 questions at 70% accuracy scores less than 80 questions at 90%.
  • 6. Treating General Awareness as unimportant. It is the highest-scoring section per minute in SSC, Railway and banking exams.
  • 7. Learning shortcuts before basics. Tricks fail on unfamiliar questions; concepts do not.
  • 8. Changing strategy after every YouTube video. Pick a plan, run it for 60 days, then adjust.
  • 9. Paying for "leaked papers" or "guaranteed selection" on Telegram. These are scams; several sellers have been arrested. No exam body sells papers.
  • 10. No sleep in the last week. Fatigue costs more marks than any topic you might cram.

One habit that fixes most of these

End every day by writing three lines: what you solved, what you got wrong, what you will revise tomorrow. It takes two minutes and makes the next day’s plan automatic.
