Current affairs appears in every major government exam. In SSC CGL it is 25 questions, in banking it is 40, in UPSC Prelims it is 15–20 direct questions plus conceptual ones. Yet most candidates waste hours reading news without retaining anything.
The 30-minute daily routine
- Read one source: The Hindu or Indian Express (national coverage) or our Daily Current Affairs page. Do not read three newspapers.
- Focus on: government schemes, bills and acts, appointments, awards, summits, MoUs, defence exercises, space/science discoveries, environment reports.
- Skip: crime news, entertainment, opinion pieces, stock market daily movements, sports scores (only note tournament winners).
- Make 10–15 bullet-point notes in a notebook or digital app. Each note: what happened, which organization, why it matters.
Weekly and monthly revision
- Sunday: revise the week’s notes in 30 minutes. Mark the 5 most likely exam questions.
- Month-end: take a 50-question current affairs quiz (use our Daily Quiz feature). Score below 35? Revise harder.
- Use monthly compilations from our blog or any standard source. Do not buy separate books — use one source consistently.
Exam-specific focus
- UPSC: conceptual questions — "Why was the Biodiversity Bill amended?" Not just "When was it passed?" Connect current events to Polity, Economy, Environment syllabus.
- SSC (CGL, CHSL, GD, MTS): factual one-liners — "Who won the 2026 Dronacharya Award?" Cover 6 months before the exam.
- Banking (IBPS, SBI, RBI): banking-specific — RBI monetary policy, repo rate changes, new bank mergers, SEBI regulations, government budget announcements.
- Railway: same as SSC level. Add railway-specific news (new trains, Vande Bharat, railway budget).
- State PSC: add state-specific current affairs — CM announcements, state budgets, new schemes, state awards.
Static GK vs current affairs
Static GK (history, geography, polity, science) is 50–60% of the General Awareness section in most exams. Current affairs is 30–40%. Do not spend all your time on current affairs and ignore static GK. A good balance: 20 minutes of current affairs + 20 minutes of static GK daily.
