IBPS PO Interview Preparation — Tips for 7565 Vacancies

Complete interview preparation guide for IBPS PO 7565 vacancies. Covers common interview questions, banking awareness, personal introduction, current affairs, and dos and donts.

Clearing IBPS PO Prelims and Mains is only two-thirds of the battle — the interview carries 100 marks and plays a decisive role in the final merit list. With 7,565 PO vacancies across 11 participating banks, the interview is your chance to stand out. Unlike written exams, the interview tests your personality, communication skills, banking awareness, and ability to think on your feet. Here is a complete guide to ace the IBPS PO interview.

Interview Format and Marking

  • Panel: 3-5 members (usually bank officials and RBI/IBPS nominee). Duration: 15-25 minutes.
  • Total marks: 100 (earlier it was 100, some banks now use scaled scores). Minimum qualifying marks: 40% (Gen), 35% (Reserved).
  • Final merit: 80% Mains + 20% Interview. If your Mains score is 100/200 and interview is 70/100, final = 80 + 14 = 94.
  • The panel evaluates: Communication skills, Banking knowledge, Current awareness, Problem-solving ability, Personality and confidence.
  • Dress code: Formal — men should wear a light-colored shirt with tie and dark trousers. Women should wear a formal saree or salwar suit. No jeans, no casual wear.

Personal Introduction — The First 3 Minutes

  • Prepare a crisp 2-minute introduction: Name, hometown, education, work experience (if any), hobbies, why banking, and one unique fact about yourself.
  • Structure: "Good morning, I am [Name] from [City]. I completed [Degree] from [College] in [Year]. I am passionate about banking because [reason]. In my free time, I [hobby]. I believe my [strength] makes me suitable for a career in banking."
  • Do NOT memorize word-for-word — it sounds robotic. Know the key points and speak naturally.
  • Every word in your introduction is potential follow-up question material. Only mention hobbies/experiences you can discuss in depth.
  • If you have work experience, mention it with specific achievements. "I worked at [Company] for 2 years where I handled [responsibility] and achieved [result]."

Banking Knowledge — Must-Know Topics

  • RBI basics: Functions of RBI, monetary policy tools (Repo rate, Reverse Repo, CRR, SLR, MSF), current rates, RBI Governor and Deputy Governors.
  • Banking terms: NPA (Non-Performing Asset), CASA ratio, Basel III norms, Priority Sector Lending (40% for domestic banks), KYC/AML, NEFT/RTGS/IMPS/UPI.
  • Recent banking news: Latest bank mergers, new bank licenses, digital banking developments, RBI circulars in last 3 months.
  • Government schemes: PM Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Mudra Yojana, Stand-Up India, PM SVANidhi, Atal Pension Yojana. Know the purpose, eligibility, and target beneficiaries.
  • Your preferred bank: Research the specific bank you want (SBI, PNB, BOB, etc.). Know its headquarters, CEO/MD, tagline, recent financial performance, and any recent news.

Common Interview Questions and How to Answer

  • "Why banking?" — "Banking is the backbone of the Indian economy. As a PO, I can contribute to financial inclusion and help people access credit and savings. The structured career growth from PO to AGM/DGM over 15-20 years is also very motivating."
  • "Why not private sector/IT?" — "I value job security, structured growth, and public service. Government banking offers work-life balance and the chance to serve rural India through branch postings."
  • "What is NPA?" — "A loan account where interest/installment is overdue for more than 90 days. NPAs are classified as Sub-standard (up to 12 months), Doubtful (12-36 months), and Loss assets. As of latest data, gross NPA ratio of scheduled commercial banks is around 3-4%."
  • "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" — "I see myself as a Branch Manager handling a team and driving business targets. I want to specialize in credit appraisal and help MSMEs access formal banking."
  • "Any questions for us?" — Always ask one thoughtful question: "What are the most important qualities you look for in a new Probationary Officer?" or "How is the bank adapting to digital banking transformation?"
