IBPS PO vs SBI PO — Which is Better?

Detailed comparison of IBPS PO and SBI PO in terms of salary, career growth, work-life balance, exam difficulty, and posting locations.

Both are Probationary Officer posts in public-sector banks with the same basic pay scale. The differences are in the bank, the exam level, and the posting policy.

Salary and allowances

  • Basic pay is the same scale (JMGS-I) in both. SBI pays higher allowances and offers 4 advance increments, so in-hand pay at SBI is typically ₹8,000–12,000 more per month in the early years.
  • Both get DA, HRA, lease accommodation options, medical cover and concessional loans. SBI’s housing and vehicle loan terms are usually better.

Exam difficulty

  • SBI PO Prelims and Mains are a notch harder, with longer puzzles, data interpretation and descriptive writing. Cut-offs are higher because more candidates compete for fewer seats.
  • IBPS PO covers 11 banks in one exam, so vacancies are larger. The paper is standard; the cut-off moves with vacancies.

Posting and transfers

  • SBI posts across India and transfers are frequent in the first 10 years, including rural postings.
  • IBPS lets you prefer banks; smaller banks tend to post closer to home, and some have state-based cadres.

Career growth

  • SBI has the largest branch network and the fastest promotion channel to Scale-II and Scale-III for good performers.
  • IBPS banks vary. Bank of Baroda, Canara and PNB promote on similar timelines; smaller banks can be slower.

Which one

Apply for both — the syllabus is almost identical. Prefer SBI if you want the brand, the higher pay and can accept transfers. Prefer IBPS if staying near home matters and you want more vacancies to compete for. Most serious candidates write both exams in the same year.
