Competitive exam preparation is a marathon, not a sprint. The average UPSC aspirant prepares for 2-3 years, SSC candidates often give 3-4 attempts, and banking aspirants juggle multiple exams simultaneously. During this journey, mental health often takes a backseat — but it should be your top priority.
Recognizing Burnout Early
- Constant fatigue even after sleeping 7-8 hours
- Unable to concentrate for more than 30 minutes at a stretch
- Loss of interest in subjects you once enjoyed
- Comparing yourself excessively with others (especially on social media)
- Physical symptoms: headaches, stomach issues, sleep disturbance
- If you experience 3+ of these for more than 2 weeks, take a planned break.
Daily Habits That Protect Mental Health
- Exercise 30 minutes daily — even a brisk walk releases endorphins and improves memory retention.
- Sleep 7-8 hours. Do NOT sacrifice sleep for extra study hours. Sleep consolidates memory.
- Limit social media to 20 minutes. Unfollow accounts that trigger comparison anxiety.
- Talk to family/friends daily. Isolation worsens anxiety. Even a 10-minute phone call helps.
- Practice 5-minute deep breathing before starting your study session.
- Keep a "Done List" instead of a "To-Do List" — it shows progress and builds confidence.
Dealing with Exam Failure
- Failure is data, not a verdict. Analyze what went wrong: was it preparation, time management, or exam-day stress?
- Most toppers failed multiple times. UPSC topper Tina Dabi cleared in 1st attempt but many IAS officers cleared after 3-5 attempts.
- Set a limit: decide in advance how many attempts you will give. This reduces open-ended anxiety.
- Have a Plan B. It is not a sign of weakness — it actually reduces pressure and improves performance.
- Consider talking to a counselor. Many government schemes provide free mental health counseling.
Kab break lein?
- Har 50 minute study ke baad 10 minute break lein (Pomodoro technique).
- Weekly off rakhein — Sunday ko padhai se chutti. Movies dekhein, dost se milein, ghumein.
- Agar 3 hafte se zyada burnout feel ho raha hai toh 1 week ka complete break lein.
- Exam ke 1 din pehle naya topic mat padhein. Revision karein aur relax rahein.
- Yaad rakhein: healthy mind = better performance. Apna khayal rakhna kamzori nahi, samajhdaari hai.
