The physical test (PET/PST) eliminates more candidates than the written exam in police recruitment. Knowing the exact standards and preparing for 3–4 months before the date makes the difference between clearing and failing.
Standard physical test components
- Physical Standard Test (PST): height and chest measurement. This is pass/fail — either you meet the minimum or you are out.
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET): running (800m–5km depending on state), long jump, high jump, shot put, and sometimes pull-ups or push-ups.
- Some states (UP, Bihar, Rajasthan) conduct PET before the written exam; others (SSC GD, Delhi Police) conduct it after.
Height requirements (male / female)
- General male: 168–170 cm in most states. UP Police: 168 cm, Bihar: 165 cm, Rajasthan: 168 cm, SSC GD: 170 cm.
- General female: 152–157 cm. UP Police: 152 cm, SSC GD: 157 cm, Rajasthan: 152 cm.
- SC/ST/OBC relaxation: 2–5 cm less in most states.
- NE states / hill areas: 5 cm less for both male and female.
- Chest (male only): 79–83 cm unexpanded, 5 cm minimum expansion. SSC GD: 80 cm (77 for ST/hilly areas).
Running standards
- SSC GD (Male): 5 km in 24 minutes. (Female): 1.6 km in 8 min 30 sec.
- UP Police Constable (Male): 4.8 km in 25 minutes. (Female): 2.4 km in 14 minutes.
- Bihar Police (Male): 1 mile (1.6 km) in 6 min 30 sec. (Female): 1 km in 5 minutes.
- Rajasthan Police (Male): 5 km in 25 minutes. (Female): no running test (long jump instead).
- Delhi Police (Male): 1.6 km in 6 min 30 sec. (Female): 800m in 4 minutes.
Preparation strategy
- Start 4 months before the expected PET date. Week 1–4: build endurance with slow 3 km runs daily.
- Week 5–8: increase distance to 5 km. Add sprint intervals (200m fast + 200m walk × 10 sets).
- Week 9–12: time trials — run the exam distance twice a week under exam time. Rest days for long jump and high jump practice.
- Week 13–16: maintain fitness, reduce volume. Two runs per week, focus on technique and timing.
- Diet: eat protein-rich food (eggs, paneer, dal, chicken). Stay hydrated. Avoid junk food and late nights.
- On exam day: arrive early, warm up for 10 minutes, start at moderate pace (not sprinting), increase speed in the last 1 km.
