RRB ALP Preparation — Complete Strategy for Assistant Loco Pilot

RRB ALP exam preparation guide with CBT-1, CBT-2, CBAT strategy and trade-specific preparation tips for aspiring railway loco pilots.

RRB ALP Exam Stages

  • CBT-1 (75 Qs, 60 min): Math (20), GI&R (25), Science (20), GA (10). Negative: 1/3.
  • CBT-2 Part A: Same as CBT-1 (100 Qs, 90 min). Part B: Trade/Engineering (75 Qs, 60 min).
  • CBAT: Computer-based Aptitude Test — tests memory, following instructions, speed distance.
  • Document Verification + Medical: Vision must be 6/6 without glasses. Color vision mandatory.
  • Training: After selection, 1-year training at Zonal Railway Training Institutes.

CBT-1 Strategy (Qualifying Stage)

  • Math (20 Qs): Number System (4-5 Qs), %, Ratio, Profit (4-5 Qs), TSD/T&W (3-4 Qs).
  • Reasoning (25 Qs): Analogies (5-6), Series (4-5), Coding (3-4), Figure-based (5-6).
  • Science (20 Qs): Physics most important (8-10 Qs). Mechanics, electricity, optics focus.
  • GA (10 Qs): Current affairs + Railway GK (Kavach, DFC, Vande Bharat, new trains).
  • Expected cutoff: 55-65 marks out of 75 (General category). Accuracy matters more than speed.

Trade-Specific Preparation (CBT-2 Part B)

  • ITI Electrician: Focus on AC/DC circuits, motors, transformers, wiring, electrical safety.
  • ITI Fitter: Metrology, drilling, welding, hand tools, thermal properties.
  • Diploma Electrical: All of ITI + power systems, electrical machines, control systems.
  • Diploma Mechanical: Thermodynamics, strength of materials, manufacturing processes.
  • Study from: NIMI trade theory books (official ITI textbooks). Railway-specific question banks.

CBAT Preparation Tips

  • CBAT tests aptitude, not knowledge. It checks if you can be a safe loco pilot.
  • Memory test: Remember sequences of numbers/colors shown briefly. Practice daily.
  • Following instructions: Complex instructions given → execute correctly under time pressure.
  • Speed & distance judgment: Critical for driving trains. Practice spatial awareness games.
  • Only top 8× vacancies from CBT-2 are called for CBAT. So CBT-2 score is crucial.
