RRB Station Master 2026 — Preparation Guide for 1250 Posts

Complete preparation strategy for RRB Station Master (Traffic Assistant) 1250 posts. Covers CBT-1, CBT-2, CBAT aptitude test, document verification, and medical fitness requirements.

Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have notified 1,250 Station Master (Traffic Assistant) vacancies across Indian Railways. Station Master is one of the most respected NTPC-level posts — it carries Level 6 pay (₹35,400-1,12,400), railway quarters, free travel passes, and the responsibility of managing an entire railway station. The selection involves CBT-1, CBT-2, Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), document verification, and medical examination.

Complete Selection Process

  • CBT-1 (Screening): 100 questions, 90 minutes. Sections: Maths (30q), General Intelligence & Reasoning (30q), General Awareness (40q). 1/3 negative marking. Qualifying nature — marks not added to final merit.
  • CBT-2 (Main Exam): 120 questions, 90 minutes. Maths (35q), General Intelligence & Reasoning (35q), General Awareness (50q). 1/3 negative marking. This decides your rank.
  • CBAT (Computer-Based Aptitude Test): Specific to Station Master. Tests cognitive abilities — memory, attention span, concentration, following directions, spatial reasoning. No syllabus — it tests natural aptitude.
  • Document Verification: Original certificates, caste certificate, medical fitness certificate.
  • Medical Standards: Visual acuity 6/6 in both eyes without glasses, no color blindness (Ishihara test). Hearing should be normal. This is strictly enforced — get your eyes tested before applying.

CBT-2 Subject-Wise Strategy

  • Mathematics (35 questions): Number System, BODMAS, HCF/LCM, Ratio, Percentage, Profit & Loss, SI/CI, Time-Work-Speed, Mensuration, Algebra basics, Trigonometry basics. Level is higher than CBT-1.
  • Reasoning (35 questions): Analogies, Coding-Decoding, Syllogism, Venn Diagrams, Blood Relations, Series, Statement-Conclusion, Data Sufficiency, Non-verbal (paper cutting, mirror image).
  • General Awareness (50 questions): Indian History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern), Geography, Polity, Economy, General Science, Current Affairs (last 12 months), Computer basics, Sports, Awards.
  • Railway-specific GK: Indian Railway history, zones (18 zones), divisions, Railway Budget, recent railway projects (Vande Bharat, Kavach, Dedicated Freight Corridor), Railway Board chairman.
  • Current Affairs weightage is 15-20 questions. Read monthly current affairs capsules from Adda247 or GradeUp.

CBAT — The Unique Challenge

  • CBAT is only for Station Master (not for other NTPC posts). It tests aptitude, not knowledge. You cannot "study" for it in the traditional sense.
  • Test areas: Following Directions (signals, sequences), Concentration (tracking moving objects), Spatial Reasoning (3D visualization), Memory (remembering patterns and numbers).
  • Practice: Play memory games, Sudoku, chess, pattern recognition puzzles. Train your brain to hold multiple pieces of information simultaneously.
  • Online simulators: Some coaching websites offer CBAT practice tests. Take at least 10-15 practice sessions to understand the interface and question types.
  • Minimum qualifying score in CBAT: 42 out of 70. Candidates who score below this are eliminated regardless of CBT-2 rank.

Preparation Timeline and Resources

  • Month 1-2: Complete syllabus — Maths (RS Aggarwal), Reasoning (Kiran Prakashan), GK (Lucent). Focus on basics and concept clarity.
  • Month 3: Previous year papers — solve RRB NTPC 2019, 2021, 2024 papers. Identify repeated topics and question patterns.
  • Month 4: Mock tests — 1 full mock per day. Analyze time spent per section. Target: Maths 30/35, Reasoning 30/35, GK 40/50.
  • Last 2 weeks: Revision + current affairs + CBAT practice. Do not start any new topic.
  • Medical preparation: Get eyes tested 6 months before exam. If you have minor vision issues, consult an ophthalmologist early. Color blindness is a permanent disqualification for Station Master.
