SSC GD Constable is the largest central recruitment — the 2024–25 cycle had 46,617 vacancies across BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, AR and SSF. The post is in Pay Level-3 (₹21,700–69,100) under the 7th Pay Commission.
Basic pay and allowances
- Basic pay on joining: ₹21,700. After training (usually 9–12 months at the respective force centre), this becomes the starting salary.
- Dearness Allowance (DA): revised every six months, currently around 53% of basic. That adds about ₹11,500.
- HRA: depends on the posting city — X cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad) get 27% of basic; Y cities 18%; Z cities 9%.
- Transport Allowance: ₹3,600 for X/Y cities, ₹1,800 for Z cities.
- Ration money, uniform allowance, risk and hardship allowance (border postings) add another ₹3,000–5,000.
In-hand salary by city type
- X-city posting (Delhi): approximately ₹38,000–42,000 per month after deductions.
- Y-city posting (Jaipur, Lucknow): approximately ₹35,000–38,000.
- Z-city / border posting: ₹33,000–36,000 base, but border allowances can push this to ₹40,000+.
- NPS (pension) deduction is 10% of basic + DA, so about ₹3,300. The government contributes 14%.
Promotion path
- Constable → Head Constable: 8–10 years or through departmental exam (LDCE).
- Head Constable → ASI (Assistant Sub-Inspector): 5–8 years from HC.
- ASI → Sub-Inspector → Inspector: possible in 20–25 years of total service.
- Direct SI recruitment (through SSC CPO) is faster for promotion; GD Constables who clear CPO while in service get accelerated promotion.
After the 8th Pay Commission
The 8th Pay Commission is expected in 2026. Based on a 2.57x fitment factor (similar to 7th CPC), the basic pay could rise to about ₹55,700, making the in-hand salary ₹60,000–70,000 for fresh constables. This is not confirmed yet, but historically fitment factors have been generous.
