Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) Group 4 is one of the most popular state-level exams in South India with 6,574 vacancies for posts like Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Typist, and Steno-Typist. The exam is based entirely on the Samacheer Kalvi school curriculum, making it accessible to anyone who studied in Tamil Nadu state board. But the competition is intense — over 15 lakh candidates apply.

The Samacheer Kalvi Strategy (Most Important)
- TNPSC Group 4 syllabus is 90% from Samacheer Kalvi textbooks (Class 6-12). Read these books cover to cover — they are your primary source.
- History: Class 6-12 History textbooks. Focus on Tamil Nadu history (Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagar, Nayaks, Freedom Movement in TN).
- Geography: Class 6-12 Geography. Focus on Indian geography + Tamil Nadu geography (rivers, districts, climate, soil, crops).
- Science: Class 6-10 Science for basics. Class 11-12 for advanced questions. Focus on Biology (diseases, nutrition) and Physics (units, simple machines).
- Polity: Class 6-12 Civics. Indian Constitution, Fundamental Rights, DPSP, amendments, local government, state government of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil/English Section Strategy
- General Tamil (if choosing Tamil): Thirukkural with meanings (at least 100 kurals), Purananuru, Agananooru, Tamil grammar (Ezhuththu, Sol, Porul), Proverbs, Tamil literature authors and works.
- General English (if choosing English): Synonyms, Antonyms, Sentence Completion, Spotting Errors, One-word Substitution, Idioms & Phrases, Comprehension passages.
- Tamil medium candidates have a clear advantage in the Tamil section — scoring 140+/150 is possible with thorough preparation.
- English medium candidates should target 120+/150 and compensate with higher GS scores.
- Practice 50 Tamil/English questions daily from previous year papers. Pattern repeats heavily.
Cut-Off and Final Preparation Tips
- Recent cut-offs (General): VAO — 170/300, Junior Assistant — 165/300, Bill Collector — 160/300. SC/ST cut-offs are 20-40 marks lower.
- Target 200+ out of 300 to be safe across all posts and categories.
- Monthly current affairs: Focus on Tamil Nadu government schemes, central government schemes, appointments, sports, awards. TNPSC asks 10-15 current affairs questions.
- Revision cycle: Read Samacheer books twice (Month 1-2), solve topic-wise PYQs (Month 3), full mocks + revision (Month 4). Four months is the ideal preparation time.
- Best resources: Samacheer Kalvi books (free PDF on textbooks.online), TNPSC previous year papers (last 10 years), Adda247/Testbook Tamil mock tests.
